Server Security Analysis |
 |
|
| |
| "I don't
know anyone who would want to hack into my system" or "who would
want information from my system" is a comment we hear regularly from
business people.
If this is what you think, you are
probably missing the point about computer security.
I.T. security encompasses a host of issues but when it comes to the
concept of other people getting into your system there are a couple
of major points to understand. If someone is trying to get into your
system it is often for 1 of 3 reasons.
1. Intruders
want to get in and be undetected so they can use your system for
their advantage.
2. Intruders are after information such
as passwords and user logons for financial gain.
3. Or it may just be for wilful damage to your system - maybe
just to prove what can be done.
In all cases you first need to be
protected and in the event of the repeated attack you need to know
the source of the problem so you can lock your system down against
those specific attacks.
We "harden up" our server and
workstation environment using a number of "security best practices."
We feel pretty confident that our system is safe but we also monitor our system on a daily
basis to see who is trying to access our system. In
the past week (at the time of preparing this website we have had
attempted intrusions from sources based in China, Taiwan, Brazil,
Thailand, Hong Kong and America. Chances are most businesses are in
a similar situation but don't know about it.
If you think you need to know about
it or are unsure whether you security implementation is adequate -
we can assist.
